Environmental Initiatives

As part of the City of Onkaparinga's GREEN BUILDING INTITIATIVE, the Coromandel Community Centre has introduced and incorporated many environmental initiatives.

  • A 45,000 litre rain water tank is located underneath the sand pit and play area.¬†Rain water from the roof of the building is captured and stored in the tank which¬†provides all of the Centres water via pump and filtration system.
  • A 2kw Photo Voltalic solar system has been installed on the roof.
  • To reduce energy dependency, initiatives including disconnecting hot water to hand basins, installing flow restrictors, removing the large water storage hot water unit and replacing it with small instant units, installing motion sensors to bathrooms and screen doors to allow better ventilation, have been incorporated in the building.
  • A small "wetland" has been installed to allow water from the car park to flow through the catchment pond and filter via the reeds, plants and soil before soaking through the soil into Chambers Creek.
  • A sustainable garden using endemic plants has been planted in front of the Centre which has reduced the requirement for watering a garden area and has attracted many butterflies to the grounds.
